Sadly, as a small charity with limited resources, we are not able to extend our services to every childhood illness. This means we cannot provide support for conditions that, while they may affect daily life, are not life-threatening or do not require intensive ongoing medical care. We understand the challenges all families face and make these decisions with a heavy heart, but focusing our efforts in this way ensures we can give the highest level of help to those children in the greatest need. Characteristics: These are serious, life-limiting conditions present from birth, typically caused by significant genetic abnormalities. They often result in profound physical disability, respiratory or cardiac compromise, and/or severe developmental impairment. Individuals may require intensive and ongoing specialist medical care, frequent hospitalisation, complex surgical procedures, and continuous support for daily living. Category 2 - Neurological and Neuromuscular Disorders Examples: Cerebral palsy, epilepsy, severe forms of muscular dystrophy, brain tumours. Characteristics: These conditions affect the brain, spinal cord, or muscles, leading to significant physical and cognitive disabilities. The Blue Knights® came about as an organisation in 1974 when a few friends from Bangor/Brewer, Maine in the U.S.A. decided to form a local recreational motorcycle club. This was to counter the adverse publicity and public perception of motorcyclists following on from the lawless activities of the motorcycle fraternity commonly known as the 'Hells Angels'. Within two years of the small club being formed, it had become an international organisation called the Blue Knights®. Today, the Blue Knights® have 637 Chapters in over 23 Countries spread across the World, with an excess of 20,490 members. Ireland’s Chapter was founded in 2005 and has 106 members. It was the treasured memories of Tyler enjoying his time as an Honorary Garda driving his patrol car that inspired Tyler's parents Margo & Stephen to make it their mission to help other Little Blue Heroes around the country. In his memory the Ryan family and supporters have raised funds to supply mini Garda cars for our Little Blue Heroes called “Tyler’s Fleet”. To date Tyler’s Fleet has issued over 60 mini Garda cars to Little Blue Heroes around the country bringing joy and creating memories for families in Tyler’s name Special thanks to Tyler's parents Margo & Stephen who continue to support other Little Blue Heroes in Tyler's memory. Sarah’s Christmas Gift We are very honoured over the past 4 years to run 'Sarah's Christmas Gift' done in memory of hero Sarah Robinson, who passed away peacefully in 2019, following a battle with cancer. Before she passed Sarah made arrangements to give something back to the charity to support other families of Little Blue Heroes. Using Sarah’s inspiration we made a promise that we would use Sarah’s gift and spread her kindness and determination to support as many families as we can with the help of our wonderful supporters and Sarah’s parents David & Majella, brothers Conor, Dáithí, Charlie and Jack who fundraise for Little Blue Heroes throughout the year. We are also very honoured to have Honorary Garda Sean Kearney from Kerry who helps with the fundraising each year by selling reindeer feed during the Christmas season. Inspired by Sarah, Little Blue Heroes Foundation have supported all Little Blue Heroes and their families over the festive seasons in 2019/2020/2021/2022 by giving them a gift package that includes Tesco vouchers for food, vouchers for toys and fuel vouchers ‘Yule Fuel’ for their cars to fuel the journeys of families of children with serious illness who had hospital appointments over the festive season. The gift packs are delivered in December by Community Gardaí who act as buddy Gardaí to the Little Blue Heroes during the year. It is a voluntary led charity with one person from the community to operate the day to day running's of the charity. It is supported by An Garda Síochána and the Garda Commissioner. The charity receives no state funding and relies heavily on community support to enable it to provide its services to families in need. The charity’s two main aims are providing financial support to families directly or indirectly through many of our programmes. It’s second aim is granting the wish of the children we support to become Honorary Gardaí within An Garda Síochána. The children are issued their own Garda uniform and are welcomed into the force by their local Gardai. To date the charity have assisted 760 families and have 408 Honorary Gardai across the country. The programme has been written to support people of all backgrounds and experience in recognising concerns about children and reporting such concerns if they arise. The programme is based on Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children and the Children First Act 2015. The programme takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete but it can be done in a number of sittings. The programme will allow you to log back in and resume where you left off. It covers topics including: - Recognising and reporting child abuse; - The role of mandated persons; - The responsibilities of organisations working with children to safeguard children; - The role of designated liaison persons. You will need to create an account using an email address to log in and complete the progamme. This allows you to complete the training gradually over time. Once you have created your account, launch 'An Introduction to Children First'. Working in partnership with the child’s primary care team, our specialised supports can be delivered in our hospice, at hospital, in the community, or in the family home, depending on the child and family’s preference. All care is provided free to families. Laura Lynn’s holistic approach ensures we support the whole family, allowing parents to have time to be Mum and Dad rather than full-time carers. Each child/family has a unique care plan which outlines the particular services/supports that are most pertinent to them. The Ronald McDonald House provides long term accommodation, care and support for families from all over Ireland whilst their children are seriously ill in Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Since the House opened in 2004 it has been a home to over 3,000 families from all over Ireland. The House has 16 ensuite family bedrooms, 3 kitchens, a dining room, a TV room, a toddlers’ room and a utility room. There is an outdoor play area for children and a small garden. There is also a 4 bedroom house situated directly across from the main house at 45 St. Mary’s Drive, Crumlin which provides an additional 4 family bedrooms. The charity plans to open a 53 bedroom Ronald McDonald House alongside the new National Children’s Hospital when it opens. The Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation, care and support for 20 families every night while their seriously ill child is an inpatient or receiving care in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin The House enables families to stay together so that they can be with their sick child at what is a very traumatic time for them all. Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. Often, it can be a long time to be away from home and divide a family. For children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having their mum and dad close by for love and support. The Ronald McDonald House program provides a Home for families so they can stay close by their hospitalised child at very little cost. The House works on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. This innovative idea is the brainchild of Jordan Power from Co. Waterford who became an Honorary Garda at the age of 15. Now aged 21 Jordan became a volunteer for the charity and a mentor for other Little Blue Heroes. From his own experience of attending numerous of appointments and stays in hospitals Jordan become only too well accustomed of the need to have power for his phone and other digital devices. His initiative aims to provide power banks with a travel bag to all our Honorary Gardaí, offering them a source of energy and connection during challenging times. In today's digital age, staying connected is more important than ever, especially for children facing extended hospital stays or medical treatments. Recognising this need, Little Blue Heroes Foundation partnered with ‘Santa on the Strand Lismore’ and ‘Club Italiano Irlanda’ to fund this initiative and with An Garda Síochána through local Community Gardaí to distribute power banks to Honorary Gardaí in local communities. These power banks serve as a lifeline for children, enabling them to stay connected with loved ones, access educational resources, and enjoy entertainment during their hospital stay. By providing this essential technology, Little Blue Heroes Foundation hopes to alleviate some of the stress and isolation often experienced by sick children and their families. At the launch of the event Jordan Power thank everyone for supporting the campaign including sponsors Santa on the Strand committee and Club Italiano Irlanda. Jordan said “I hope this will help all the families stay connected while in hospital or at appointments. I think it's very important to be able to charge your devices to stay in touch with home, watch programmes or play games while in hospital. I hope this will make life a bit easier for all the families”. Supporting the initiative Karl Heller, Chairperson, at Little Blue Heroes Foundation said “Through the ‘Jordan EmPower Hope’ campaign, we aim to bring joy and comfort to sick children by providing them with the power to stay connected to the world around them."
